Thee Attacks (Copenhagen, Denmark) [Wednesday, March 14, 3:20pm]
After successfully overtaking crowds at last year’s SXSW, the 60s garage rock inspired Thee Attacks return to Austin. The popular Denmark band’s music has been featured in the movie Jensen & Jensen and on national radio and TV, and their debut album That’s Mister Attack To You (Crunchy Frog Records) and new music demand to be heard and supported with another round of live performances in America.
Get slayed by the melodic riffs of Thee Attacks at Bernadette’s on the afternoon of day two of Indie Radio Rocks The World 2.
Bloody Beach (Bergen, Norway) [Wednesday, March 14, 12:40pm]
Where to begin with Bloody Beach?… Maybe with their international appeal.
“The music of Bloody Beach is a conglomerate of musical styles from around the world, but always with a firm foothold in energetic indie rock. Everyone from Turkish DJs to Scandinavian indie kids has been blown away by their live performances. Danceable songs fronted by a great front man, which have the power to turn any audience into a smiling, dancing crowd.”

The eclectic indie band from Norway’s appeal is evident in their “Gonzo” style of music as performers, and as music lovers with a penchant for compiling and sharing favorite tunes from around the world (see Bloody Beach Pirate Radio IV).
Other Bloody Beach performances during SXSW TBA soon, but don’t miss their performance @ Bernadette’s Wednesday afternoon.

Art Institute (Houston, TX) [Wednesday, March 14, 12:00pm]
New wave trio Art Institute releases an eponymous split EP 7” with Austin’s KNIFIGHT the same week they perform at Indie Radio Rocks The World 2. The band’s name suggests more of an irreverent (piss)take on the art schools that profit more than the certified artists that graduate, but Art Institute does sound artful, blending their loves of early new wave, and post punk music with an artless exuberance not to be missed live.

Indie Radio Rocks The World doesn’t have a list of other parties for Art Institute yet, but we will update this post with date/s and time/s as soon as we get an update for our second day’s awesome opening band.

Mittenfields [Tuesday, March 13, 12:00pm]
The Washington D.C. shoegaze and noise rock/pop band turns the volume “up to 11” during SXSW.
Mittenfields isn’t comfortable simply covering or mimicking their D.C. indie rock predecessor’s successes:
“Combining a densely layered three‐guitar attack with raw, nervy vocals, Mittenfields have drawn comparisons to some of the best indie rock acts of the 1990s. Far from an exercise in pure nostalgia, however, the DC‐based ensemble has crafted its own unique sound combining elements of indie rock, shoegaze and noise pop.”
If you miss Mittenfields at our free party @ Bernadette’s, there will be other opportunities to feel the noise:
Sweet Tea Pumpkin Pie Showcases (Casa Chapala):
Wednesday, March 14, 8:10pm
Saturday, March 17, 7:35pm
Free w/ RSVP @ Do512.

‘Rock The Pilot’: Improvised Test/Pilot Podcast
“Juliet The Painting” from Silent Diane’s Riverside 7” (Answering Machine Recordings)
Tentatively titled “Rock The Pilot” w/ diy danna, the 30-minute Austin music pilot is my very first recorded attempt at a series of shows for Radio Casbah, in which I program selections from the richly diverse local music scene. There is no genre-specific format, but I may include thematic elements in the show on a regular basis. For example: Although tonight’s completely improvised recorded show featured random selections, all my selections happen to feature local musicians who incorporate electronic elements in their recordings and live performances, like synthesizers and circuit bending.
Playlist (Saturday, March 19, 2011, divided into 3 parts due to blog post limits)
1. “Macintosh Tapes” (Weird Life EP - a trial recording for the forthcoming Truck Month LP, BUGSOUND) - SLUGBUG, an analog synth “white nerd funk” band.
2. “The False Cross” (Boy Friend, self-released Jan. 2011) - Boy Friend, Austin shoegaze/chillwave duo Christa Palazzolo (formerly of Belaire and Sleep∞Over), and Sarah Brown (formerly of Sleep∞Over)
3. “Bending Trees” (YouTube video version of single from The Hearts and The Minds EP) - The Hearts and The Minds, a psychedelic pop band that incorporates electronics/circuit bending.
4. “Juliet The Painting” (b-side of Riverside 7”, Answering Machine Recordings) - Silent Diane, a minimal, gothic, surreal vocal and synthesizer duo.
5. “4 A Limited Time” (digital download single) - LOST CAT MAGNET, solo synth/art-rock musician Ricardo Acevedo.
Listen @ SoundCloud:
♫Part 1 - SLUGBUG and Boy Friend
♫Part 2 - The Hearts and The Minds
♫Part 3 (top link/audio file) - Silent Diane and LOST CAT MAGNET
Perhaps next week’s show, if there is one, will be feature experimental, noise, and improvisational bands from Austin.
Comments and suggestions are welcome!

In 2010, well-known Austin indie rockers and songwriters John Rose and Seth Whaland embarked on a new musical journey as Bad Blood. Captivating melodies, in-sync harmonizing and guitar strumming accompany clear, storytelling lyrics that range from pensive to humorous. This makes Bad Blood a country pair you don’t want to miss live.
Bad Blood is the hard act to follow, performing at 12:15 pm on the Cherry Stage (inside) of Cherrywood Coffehouse, Wed. 3/16.

Nerdkween is Monica Arrington, whose unique style of indie pop—utilizing analog/lo-fi instrumentation to accompany her gentle yet commanding voice—impresses growing audiences. Arrington’s organic recordings, like debut LP Synergy (Stickfigure Records, 2008) and ProfitandLoss (2010), are full of melancholic ponderings and reflective revelations that meet with empathic ears, challenged minds, and uplifted hearts. Arriving from Atlanta, Georgia this week, Nerdkween performs an official SXSW showcase at Stephen F’s Bar in Austin, Texas Saturday, March 19.

Upstate New Yorkers The Coast of Nebraska moved to Austin, Texas in 2010, not long aftter releasing their debut album Welcome To… There is a sense of humor meshed with the seriousness of their psychedelic rock influenced and semi-polished gemstone pop melodies, matched with catchy riffs that make the duo interesting and fun to listen to live.

Listen to and download Welcome To…
Guitarist and vocalist Matt Bell and drummer Will Hoback are currently playing fun, energetic sets in Austin and other parts of Texas while working on a new album filled with more melodic and thoughtful songwriting—and catchy riff rock goodness.

Austin, Texas based Whale Watch is not your typical indie post-punk band. Although the music experimenters seem to have started as a “jam band” (see Facebook), the group thrives on practicing the art of improvisation, and does it very well. Unencumbered by written and memorized composition, the seemingly haphazard guitar, keyboard synthesizer, bass and drum sessions meld into random accord on record.
Listen and download the live take of the eponymous Whale Watch EP, then experience the band live on the Cherry Stage (inside) @ Cherrywood Coffeehouse, Wednesday, March 16, 5:30 pm.

Austin’s Ghost Lapse hasn’t been on the music scene long, only haunting a few local venues the past two years, but their analog sets of youthful rock verve—and reverb—leave audiences wanting more. Let’s hope more shows and recordings are on the way.
Listen to and download “CB4” free, and go to myspace.com/ghostlapse for the latest tracks. (The band also has a Facebook page.)
Ghost Lapse floats on the Wood Stage (outside) at 12:45 pm.

If you’ve lived in Austin, Texas more than a year and you haven’t heard Darling New Neighbors, then you haven’t experienced the best of Austin’s unique live music scene. DNN has released two darling LPs - Everyday is Saturday Night (2006), and Rocket (2009) - to critical and fan approval, and have toured enough to win over audiences who wish they lived next door to the band.

Click the player above to listen to DNN’s “Gasoline” from Rocket (2009)
Guitar, bass, accordion, violin and drums are the core instruments Darling New Neighbors use to fuse rock, pop, country, traditional Texas folk (Tejano/Tex-Mex), and disco genres that may compel even the dullest person in the audience to “grito”. DNN has garnered attention from indie music journals over the past few years, and Rocket is considered “a great go-to record” among indie music bloggers and radio DJs. (See Austin Chronicle and Party Ends.)
Look for new music from Darling New Neighbors later in 2011. But in the meantime, don’t miss them live on the Cherry Stage (inside) @ Cherrywood Coffeehouse, Wed. 3/16, 6:15 pm.
Addendum: A recently discovered, cool DNN “Gasoline” video by Pal Float.

Fever Fever is “R” for Rosie, “S” for Smit, “E” for Ellie.
From first hearing the title track of their EP, “Bloodless”, we knew we wanted to catch Fever Fever during SXSW. The Norwich, UK self-described “art punk” trio end our night with a bang on the Cherry Stage (inside), 10:45 pm.
