Feuding Fathers (Austin & San Antonio, Texas) [Wednesday, March 14, 4:00pm]

Feuding Fathers are an eclectic trio from two cities that have become Texas indie music’s heart of experimentation. What at first sounds like a half-baked melange of words and music, becomes an engaging art of sound in recordings and live performances.

Experience the experimental rock sounds of Feuding Fathers on bandcamp, and live at Bernadette’s on day two of Indie Radio Rocks The World 2.

Austin Demands Denmark: Thee Attacks

Austin Demands Denmark: Thee Attacks:

The popular Denmark band’s music has been featured in the movie Jensen & Jensen and on national radio and TV, and their debut album That’s Mister Attack To You (Crunchy Frog Records) and new music demand to be heard and supported with another round of live performances in America.

Get slayed by the melodic riffs of Thee Attacks at Bernadette’s on the afternoon of day two of Indie Radio Rocks The World 2.

The Lonesome Heroes: The Cosmic Americana Travelers Return

The alt-country indie band featuring songwriting and singing duo Rich Russell and Landry McMeans were wonderful performers last year, and we welcome The Lonesome Heroes back after a year of touring and live performances in town that have wooed many more lifetime fans.

Georgette (Austin, TX) [Tuesday, March 13, 2:40pm]

The band’s name implies a fabric of lightweight sheerness, but the sound of Austin indie ensemble Georgette brings a weighted songwriting and musicianship tapestry of folk, jazz, and popular music to the stage and studio. Formed when singer/songwriter Natasha Dahanayake met local musicians Jesse Chan and Ellen Murray, Georgette soon included Catie Johnson, and a few other talented supporting musicians featured in live performances and recordings.

Before they grace Bernadette’s with a performance at Indie Radio Rocks The World 2 on Tuesday, March 13 (2:40pm), listen to Georgette live at West By West Campus, Saturday, February 25, Eden House stage, 9pm.

Darwin’s Finches Fly Freely In Austin Again

The seemingly slacker/effortless band’s Texas psychedelic and surf rock influences are evident, but the band takes a slyly experimental, smart rock approach to songwriting that makes them a Houston indie music treasure.

Updates with news of their other shows in March will be posted soon.

The Escatones (Houston, TX) [Wednesday, March 14, 2:00pm]

The Escatones Bare All For The Love of Psychedelic Surf Rock

The photo is a rarity and a bit of an inside joke, because The Escatones (Houston via Galveston, TX and Detroit, MI) are known for an undressed sense of expression on stage, as well as donning house dresses. But they are becoming even better known for their expressive garage rock that blends psychedelic and surf styles.

Dudes Die Bring ‘Coloratura’ To Austin’s Indie Rock

Celebrating an aptly named full length album, Coloratura, Austin based Dudes Die is discovering a growing fan base and critical recognition for their emotive melodic and rhythmic approach to rock music. Dudes Die exude both the joy of garage rock jamming and the spirituality of psychedelic grooving.

Tango In The Attic [Tuesday, March 13, 2:00pm]

The accurately self-described “offbeat slopey pop” of Tango In The Attic returns to SXSW. The indie pop/rock band from Scotland that seems to sail more than surf left a lovely first impression on more than a few music lovers and journalists last year, and enjoyed they experience so much they’re back to wow more of us.

Before their first SXSW appearance, Tango In The Attic made their first official music video, for “Sketch By Quentin Blake”. Directed by the band, the video pays homage to “Be Kind Rewind” director Michel Gondry and celebrated children’s author Roald Dahl.

If you miss them at our free shindig at Bernadette’s (see date and time above), then we’ll keep you posted soon about other Tango In The Attic performances during SXSW, as soon as we find out the when and where.

Somehow, I forgot to share this earlier. Now we’re officially unofficial.

Bloody Beach shares international 'pirate radio' treasures @ SXSW

Bloody Beach shares international 'pirate radio' treasures @ SXSW:

Bloody Beach (Bergen, Norway) [Wednesday, March 14, 12:40pm]

Where to begin with Bloody Beach?… Maybe with their international appeal.

“The music of Bloody Beach is a conglomerate of musical styles from around the world, but always with a firm foothold in energetic indie rock. Everyone from Turkish DJs to Scandinavian indie kids has been blown away by their live performances. Danceable songs fronted by a great front man, which have the power to turn any audience into a smiling, dancing crowd.”

The eclectic indie band from Norway’s appeal is evident in their “Gonzo” style of music as performers, and as music lovers with a penchant for compiling and sharing favorite tunes from around the world (see Bloody Beach Pirate Radio IV).

Art Institute (Houston, TX) [Wednesday, March 14, 12:00pm]

New wave trio Art Institute releases an eponymous split EP 7” with Austin’s KNIFIGHT the same week they perform at Indie Radio Rocks The World 2. The band’s name suggests more of an irreverent (piss)take on the art schools that profit more than the certified artists that graduate, but Art Institute does sound artful, blending their loves of early new wave, and post punk music with an artless exuberance not to be missed live.

Artsy band photo featured in Ear Candy Mag

Indie Radio Rocks The World doesn’t have a list of other parties for Art Institute yet, but we will update this post with date/s and time/s as soon as we get an update for our second day’s awesome opening band.

The Tontons: Houston’s indie rock sweethearts

The Houston indie rock scene has a sweetheart: The Tontons, and they’re pitching woo to the rest of America with their current tour after releasing the Golden EP.

Expect The Tontons to win over more ears and hearts of music lovers in Austin during SXSW. Details of official and unofficial showcases forthcoming, but don’t forget to schedule to hear them Wednesday afternoon at Bernadette’s.

Mittenfields Turns The Volume "Up To 11" During SXSW

Mittenfields Turns The Volume "Up To 11" During SXSW:

The Washington D.C. shoegaze and noise rock/pop band turns the volume “up to 11” during SXSW.

Mittenfields isn’t comfortable simply covering or mimicking their D.C. indie rock predecessor’s successes:

“Combining a densely layered three‐guitar attack with raw, nervy vocals, Mittenfields have drawn comparisons to some of the best indie rock acts of the 1990s. Far from an exercise in pure nostalgia, however, the DC‐based ensemble has crafted its own unique sound combining elements of indie rock, shoegaze and noise pop.”

If you miss Mittenfields at our free party @ Bernadette’s, there will be other opportunities to feel the noise:

Sweet Tea Pumpkin Pie Showcases (Casa Chapala):

I blogged too hastily earlier. After receiving many indie musician referrals from agents, managers, labels, and the artists themselves, I decided to bring back the unofficial SXSW showcase!

Performers have been confirmed for two days at the awesome Bernadette’s Bar, and the schedule and few more surprises will be announced soon!

Check our our event at one of your favorite sites in the meantime:

I’m excited! I hope you are too - because our second year brings the rompus*!

‘Rock The Pilot’: Improvised Test/Pilot Podcast

“Juliet The Painting” from Silent Diane’s Riverside 7” (Answering Machine Recordings)

Tentatively titled “Rock The Pilot” w/ diy danna, the 30-minute Austin music pilot is my very first recorded attempt at a series of shows for Radio Casbah, in which I program selections from the richly diverse local music scene. There is no genre-specific format, but I may include thematic elements in the show on a regular basis. For example: Although tonight’s completely improvised recorded show featured random selections, all my selections happen to feature local musicians who incorporate electronic elements in their recordings and live performances, like synthesizers and circuit bending.

Playlist (Saturday, March 19, 2011, divided into 3 parts due to blog post limits)

Listen @ SoundCloud:

Perhaps next week’s show, if there is one, will be feature experimental, noise, and improvisational bands from Austin.

Comments and suggestions are welcome!
